TRACING KANT’S CONCEPTION OF SUBLIME, NATURE, SENSUS COMMUNIS, AND GENIUS IN WORKS OF CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH

Abstract

Bu çalışma ile estetik - sanat ilişkisini gözeterek Kant estetiğinin sanatsal çalışmalarda, özellikle Caspar David Friedrich'in eserlerinde kendisini nasıl dışa vurabileceğini serimlemeyi hedeflemekteyim. Bu türden bir amacı gerçekleştirebilmek için öncelikle 'yüce', 'doğa', 'sensus communis' ve 'deha' kavramlarının Kant estetiğinde nasıl bir konuma sahip olduğunu açıklamaya odaklanacağım. Caspar David Friedrich'in, sanatında doğaya nasıl bir pay biçtiğini aktarabilmek için çeşitli eserlerinden örnekler sunacağım. Kant estetiği ve Caspar David Friedrich'in eserleri arasındaki bağlantı ön plana çıkarılan kavramlar aracılığıyla kurulduktan sonra, 'rückenfigur' kavramı ekseninde bu ilişkiyi gösterip yorumlayacağım. Ayrıca Caspar David Friedrich'in, Kant'ın estetik düşüncesi kapsamında bir deha olup olmadığını da olabildiğince açık kılmaya çalışacağım

With this study, I aim to expose how Kant’s aesthetics expresses itself in artistic works, especially in Caspar David Friedrich’s works, by considering the aesthetics – art relationship. To fullfill such an aim, first of all, I will focus on explaining the positions of the concepts of ‘sublime’, ‘nature’, ‘sensus communis’ and ‘genius’ in Kantian aesthetics. In order to narrate how Caspar David Friedrich places nature within his art, I will show some examples from his works of art. Once the relationship between Kantian aesthetics and Caspar David Friedrich’s works of art is established through featured concepts, I will show and interpret this relationship on axis of the concept of ‘rückenfigur’. Also, I will try to explain, as plainly as possible, whether Caspar David Friedrich is a genius or not, within the context of Kant’s aesthetic thought
