COMPUTER PROGRAMMING STUDENTS' REASONS FOR CHOOSING THIS PROGRAM: TNKÜ TECHNICAL SCIENCES MYO EXAMPLE

Abstract

Theaim of this study is to determine the reasons why Computer Programming studentsof Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (TNKÜ) Vocational School of TechnicalSciences (TBMYO) choose this program. Qualitative analysis method was used inthe study. In order to carry out the research, a semi-structured interview formwith four open-ended questions was used to determine the opinions of 10randomly selected students among the first year students in ComputerProgramming. The reliability of the form was ensured determining the codes ofconsensus and disagreement from the codes created by two researchersseparately. As a result of the analysis of the data, it was seen that thestudents evaluated the reasons of their choice in four basic and twosub-categories. The majority of students stated that they choose the programbecause of their special interest, their families and friends were noteffective in their choices and being close to Istanbul influenced theirchoices. In order to develope the quality of the Computer Programming programin line with the expectations of the students, it is recommended to takemeasures to improve the technological infrastructure, to emphasize on codewriting training and to improve the possibilities of vertical transfer toundergraduate education.

Çalışmanınamacı, Tekirdağ Namık Kemal Üniversitesi (TNKÜ) Teknik Bilimler MeslekYüksekokulu (TBMYO) Bilgisayar Programcılığı öğrencilerinin programlarınıtercih nedenlerini belirlemektir. Araştırmada nitel analiz yöntemikullanılmıştır. Araştırmayı yürütebilmek için Bilgisayar Programcılığıprogramının birinci sınıfında öğrenim görmekte olan öğrenciler arasındanrastgele seçilen 10 öğrencinin görüşlerini belirlemek amacıyla, dört açık uçlusoru içeren yarı yapılandırılmış bir görüşme formundan yararlanılmıştır. Ölçmearacından elde edilen veriler içerik analizi ile değerlendirilmiştir. İkiaraştırmacının ayrı ayrı oluşturdukları kodlardan görüş birliği ve görüşayrılığı olan kodlar belirlenerek, formun güvenirliği sağlanmıştır. Verilerinanalizi sonucunda, öğrencilerin programlarını tercih nedenlerini dört temel veiki alt kategoride değerlendirdikleri görülmüştür. Öğrencilerin çoğunluğu özelilgi alanına girdiği için programı tercih ettiğini, tercihlerinde ailelerininve arkadaş çevrelerinin etkili olmadığını ve İstanbul’a yakınlığın tercihlerinietkilediğini belirtmişlerdir. Bilgisayar Programcılığı programınıneğitim-öğretim niteliğinin, öğrencilerin beklentileri doğrultusundageliştirilmesi için teknolojik altyapıyı iyileştirme, kod yazımı eğitimine ağırlıkverme ve lisans öğrenimine dikey geçiş olanaklarını iyileştirici tedbirlerin alınması önerilmektedir.
